Chapter 9

SHE WAS ON THE BRINK of deepest sleep, the world and its problems seeping away, when Sam yelled, “Loretta, wake up and get up here!”

“What’s wrong?” she answered groggily, shaking the sleep off and sitting up in the bed.

“Our nemesis is back. Look behind us.”

Loretta didn’t waste time but scrambled up front and buckled her seatbelt. Her eyes darted to the rearview mirror and saw the headlights. The Freightliner was right behind them again, blowing its horn, blinking its lights, and revving its engine. Its wheels spun snow and slush out all around. It had stopped being a truck and had become her nightmare.

She looked over at Sam. “Well so much for Sgt. Wilder’s theory that the police would scare him away.”

“Yeah, I was afraid it wouldn’t. This guy’s obsessed. You have a cell, call the police.”

She tried. “It’s not working...what’s new? I really need a better cell phone.” She snapped the phone shut and dropped it on the floorboard.

Sam picked up the CB mike and asked for help. No answer.

“Don’t waste your breath,” Loretta grumbled. “It wasn’t working earlier, either.”

“Another coincidence? I think not. This guy is nothing but thorough.”

The truck behind them closed in.

“What does he want?” Loretta glared over her shoulder. “Why is he doing this?” They were so near to Cheyenne. Why couldn’t they finish their journey in peace? If the other trucker wanted revenge for something Jed had done, why was he coming after her? She hadn’t done anything.

Something hit the back of their trailer and the jolt and noise of impact thundered through the silent night.

Instead of speeding Baby Blue up to avoid another collision, Sam slowed down.

“I’m not playing his game. I’m going to bluff him out and see what he does.”

“He’ll smash into us again, that’s what he’ll do.” Loretta’s heart thumped angrily and she punched the seat with her right fist. “He’s an idiot.”

“We’ll see.”

Baby Blue had come almost to a dead stop in the middle of the road and the truck behind them was doing the same. It crouched behind them, an ugly snow monster growling against the glittering landscape.

“If we both sit here too long someone’s going to hit us,” Loretta said.

“I doubt it. I haven’t seen another vehicle since we left Sgt. Wilder. The weather’s too bad. People are sitting this storm out.”

“Not us. Not that weirdo behind us.”

Sam shifted the gears and drove Baby Blue onto the narrow shoulder next to a metal guardrail and braked to a full stop. Loretta glanced out her window and saw the deep pit covered in a bumpy blanket of glistening gray. It could have been a few feet or hundreds of feet down, but the darkness and shadows made it hard to tell.

The other truck pulled in behind them, revving its engine up and down as if it were a living, breathing entity. It gave Loretta the creeps.

Sam had his hand on the door handle and the interior light blinked on. His face was grave and his eyes were determined.
